The Power of Life

- will always win

Written 20 August 2007 - (51 lines)

When you see a young plant sprout
Breaking through the soil without
Any problem think about

What that really represents
Every obstacle soon relents
Nothing hinders or prevents

The force of life from marching on
Powered by the Earth and Sun
Making sure the job is done

By some all-embracing law
Without any apparent flaw
Everything recedes in awe

And concedes the battleground
To the force which can be found
Within ourselves and all around

It permeates the universe
Its roles are many and diverse
Its vital mission to disperse

A presence into each design
A living proof we cannot define
Deep down we know it is benign

That force is irresistible
Maybe it really is the will
Of the Creator who is still

Not fully satisfied with the past
Each action better than the last
The scale and number both so vast

That we can scarcely comprehend
The countless forms of life all send
Different messages which in the end

Merge into one, namely: WE ARE!
Whether nurtured by atom or star
Within our reach or from afar

Before that mysterious force-field
Protected by its magic shield
Everything else must bow and yield

Felt and acknowledged yet concealed
Even if all humanity appealed
Would it ever be revealed?

May heaven forbid that it should
Until we all have understood
This is the only force for good

A small beginning to be aware
Its purpose is to spread and share
The signs of creation everywhere

Watch a seedling pierce the road
Think of the power that was bestowed
According to some sacred code

Where does it have its origin?
God only knows the facts within
The Power of Life will always win

Intelligent Design

- or pure chance?

Written June-July 2007 - (54 lines)

Not easy to see
Against the tree
A hawkmoth was taking some rest
It suddenly stirred
Startled by a bird
Which was busy making a nest

It spread its grey
Forewings in display
Adopting a defensive stance
The bird made a squeak
Dropped the straws in its beak
And gave it a surprised glance

On the underwings
Concentric rings
Coloured like animal eyes
Carefully traced
Suitably spaced
And the appropriate size

Some added white
Like reflected light
Makes the illusion complete
Of maybe an owl
Or a fox on the prowl
Looking for something to eat!

The bird got a scare
And took to the air
It did not want to come closer
The deception done
And the danger gone
The hawkmoth regained its composure

Unaware
Of the look-alike stare
On its wings and of its function
The hawkmoth went through
What it is programmed to do -
A purely instinctive reaction

An intriguing trait
To imitate
Its enemy's enemies!
But the moth cannot think -
Where is the link?
How did it come to this?

How could chance
Possibly enhance
Life's terribly complex fabric?
It's a fairytale
Which will not fail
To enchant believers in magic!

Could all this come
About by some
Accidental random mutation?
Surely benign
Intelligent design
Is a more reasonable explanation!

The Compound Eye of the Dragonfly

- is 300 million years old

Written 20-22 January 2007 - (60 lines)

Preserved in rock
Which stopped the clock
So the story could be told
The compound eye
Of the dragonfly
Is three hundred million years old

It looks just the same
As the one which came
So close to me yesterday
It hovered in the sun
And the inspection done
Went swiftly on its way

It seems that no feature
Of this elegant creature
Has changed during time's awesome span
That is truly amazing
Those high-tech eyes gazing
On this world so long before man

The battle-cry:
"Adapt or DIE!"
Is generally accepted
We are asked to believe
There is no reprieve
All is naturally selected

That the law is still
Get killed or kill
As the fight for survival rages
Yet the dragonfly
Refused to die
And flew on down through the ages

In size so close
They would superimpose
As if it had just defected
One locked in stone
One a free-flying drone
As if just resurrected

If experiment
Without intent
Through casual rolls of the dice
Had relevance
To life's advance
A few million years would suffice

This fragile thing
With its delicate wings
Has not behaved as expected
We can either delude
Ourselves or conclude
It arrived already perfected

The dragonfly
And its compound eye
Clearly did not evolve
Trusted so long
Could Darwin be wrong?
An issue here to resolve!

We ask in vain
Try to explain
And the subject is much debated
It seems to me
The answer must be
Simply: it was created!
